A model's portfolio - or book - is a collection of the model's best, professionally produced photographs. Family and holiday snaps don't count. Depending on where you are in your career, your model portfolio would contain photographs produced specifically for your portfolio, tear sheets (published photographs from past assignments, torn out of magazines) or a mixture of both. If you do need a portfolio, remember that your model portfolio is your calling card, your showcase and your single-most important investment in your career. The cheapest photographer you can find may well not be your best option. Success is the result of solid investment and hard work, not just luck. It is unrealistic to assume that you can get success from investing nothing at all. A portfolio can consist of prints; it can come on a CD or be online. REAL MODELS DON’T WORK FOR FREE!!!

First of all, I would like to applaud all of my fellow models who are on their grind everyday and pursue each and every opportunity they encounter. Yes ladies, hard work does pay off, but for what type of payment are you looking? Ask yourself that question and think of an answer before you continue to read.
What are we worth as models? To put everything into perspective: there can be no ad, pictorial, photography, magazines, etc. without the participation of models. With that said, why are some of us willing to devalue ourselves by working for free? Let me explain why this doesn't make sense...
(a) The people involved in the project in which you're participating are doing the project for a particular reason. It's usually not for fun, it's for some type of profit or promotion in order to gain profit. Either way, they're working toward making some money and you get nothing from the deal.
(b) If it's an impromptu cattle call, chances are the final product will be too embarrassing to put on your resume or probably won't be used by the producer anyhow. Why will this be embarrassing? because they'll attract wannabe models (girls who aren't visually pleasing) and forced to use them, plus you, because that's all they had to work with. The final product will not be useable. And to be real, professional productions pre-select models in what they call a casting.
Models are paid to make things look attractive; everyone who hires a model is doing so with that in mind. Ladies please keep your value and image in mind when you are choosing your "destiny." By "destiny" I mean your future in entertainment. Do you want the "ghetto ghost from jobs past" to stop you from landing that big acting role that you always wanted? or that great billboard ad that pays? or that national commercial that will generate residual income for you?
The point of this blog is to encourage patience. That job that is for you will come one day, so don't mess up your chances by being too eager to be seen for free. Not all exposure is good exposure remember that and think of it the next time that someone tells you that a job pays in exposure.
